Editing Services

I want to help you on your journey to completing your book!

Whether you’re hoping to go indie or looking to query agents, your manuscript can always benefit from a second set of eyes. I’ve worked with published authors to writers starting their first drafts. Editing can seem like a daunting process, but I’m here to help. I want you to succeed.

We can’t always see everything our readers will. Our minds know what we’re intending to put on the page and often fill in blank spaces or glaze over details readers might find confusing. That’s why editing, critiquing, and author networking are crucial before publication. The more feedback you get, the better your book will be.

Until June 2020, I’m offering editing services for free to gain experience. All I ask in return is an honest testimony of my work. I’ll post any links you wish to have included with your feedback. Cake deal, right?

Below, you will find a list of editing services I currently offer. If you are interested in any of these items, please contact me so we can discuss specifics and arrange a time to begin.

Please note: December 2019 and January 2020 are booked.

I currently work with Word (.doc/.docx) and Google Docs. Just be sure to permit me “suggesting” or “editing” mode if using Google. I’m not currently in a position to take paper manuscripts.

Before we begin, I’d like to offer all first-time clients a free ten-page edit of your work (whichever stage you’re looking for). That way  you can decide if you like my editing style and I can ensure I’m the right fit for your work. We also want to ensure the editing stage is appropriate so our efforts can be efficient. I always start off new client editing sessions with a few questions about you and your work. This way, I can understand what your goals are and help you achieve them.

I currently offer the following (details below):
Book Maps
Critiques
Developmental Edits
Proofreads
Reflections
Book Formatting
Cover Design
All editing services offered are FREE through June 2020.
July 2020 will begin half-price services.
Full price will begin in January 2021.

Book Maps

Any Genre

Book maps are great for checking the overall tension, character growth, and plot arcs of a story. This is a good option if you’re unsure about the effectiveness of your suspense, action and emotion.

Includes:

  1. A single read-through of your work.
  2. A chart displaying plot lines and character arcs within the work, by chapter
  3. A tension graph by plotline and chapter
  4. A letter summarizing developmental concerns and considerations

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 1-2 weeks.**

Through June 2020: FREE
July 2020’s 1/2 Price: $1 per 1,000 words
2021 Full Price: $2 per 1,000 words

Critiques

Any Genre

This choice is best when you’re working with an initial draft of your manuscript. You’ll receive critical feedback on developmental concerns without paying the developmental price.

Includes:

  1. A light developmental edit from a single read-through of your work.
  2. Comments in-text covering topics from character arcs and plot holes to consistency and copyediting concerns.
  3. A final critique sheet — with answered questions which you can view here: Sample Critique Sheet — will be returned with the version of your document that includes my in-text notes. This is a document I created to provide the most feedback on a manuscript in the smallest amount of space.

It can still be overwhelming. I always encourage writers to read through the completed sheet first because it contains more general concerns (developmental), and then look through the details of the in-text notes. It doesn’t make sense to use your precious time to edit details of a section only to decide to cut it later.

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 1-2 weeks.**

Through June 2020: FREE
July 2020’s 1/2 Price: $2 per 1,000 words
2021 Full Price: $4 per 1,000 words

Developmental Edits

Science Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, Military, Women’s Fiction (any sub-genre therein)
These edits are more intense so I must limit acceptable genres to the ones I know best–for quality of feedback.

This is the heavy edit of the settings, events, characters, arcs, plots, tension, timeline, transitions, etc. of your manuscript. Making a story comprehensible, inspiring, entertaining and without holes is critical for reader enjoyment.

Includes:

  1. Three reads of your manuscript:
    1. First for comprehension of characters, plot, etc.
    2. Second to assess developmental concerns
    3. Third to confirm/clean my suggested improvements
  2. Comments in-text covering topics from character arcs and plot holes to consistency and copyediting concerns.
  3. In-line edits (copyediting and developmental) with Track Changes turned on
  4. A final critique letter–similar to the critique sheet but more in-depth–will be returned with the version of your document that includes my in-text notes.

Authors please include:

  1. A synopsis (query letter, back cover copy, or extended blurb for media)
  2. Any technical terms, character, world-building, or book series info sheets

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 2-4 weeks.**

Through June 2020: FREE
July 2020’s 1/2 Price: $6 per 1,000 words
2021 Full Price: $12 per 1,000 words

Line Editing and Copyediting

I will offer these soon.

———-

Proofreads

Since I’m new to copyediting, I’m offering a proofread instead of a copyedit. If your work has been through developmental, line, and copyedits and you want a back-up set of eyes for assurance, this is the choice for you.

Includes:

  1. Check for errors in grammar/mechanics
  2. Check consistency of terms/names/descriptions etc.

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 1-2 weeks.**

Through June 2020: FREE
July 2020’s 1/2 Price: $1 per 1,000 words
2021 Full Price: $2 per 1,000 words

Reflection

If you have had me perform any of the above edits and wish to have me look over your changes at a later date (because we all take different amounts of time to work through alterations) please request a “Reflection.” I will give your work a single read-through with a short letter covering anything I find that may still need tweaking.

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 1-2 weeks.**

Through June 2020: FREE
July 2020’s 1/2 Price: $50
2021 Full Price: $100

———-

Book Formatting

If you have a Word Document or .docx, I can convert it into the following:

PDF
MOBI
EPUB
Filtered HTML

I am also happy to set up a Print on Demand file for KDP if you can provide specifications for your book (size, page count)

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 1-2 weeks.**

Through June 2020: FREE
July 2020’s 1/2 Price: $50
2021 Full Price: $100

Cover Designs

(Click here to see my designs)

I can create PSD, JPEG, PNG, and PDF cover images for your book (in digital and print formats) including:

Front Cover: Image+ Title, Author Name, Quotes

Spine: Image Wrap/No Wrap, Text, Logo,

Back Cover: Image + Logo, Quotes, Back Matter Synopsis, Author Photo

If you have ISBNs and barcodes already selected for your print files, please let me know ahead of time. Otherwise, I will assume you are using a publisher that puts the necessary barcodes on the book (as in with KDP Print on Demand).

Disclaimer: I use stock photos to create covers. I am not an artist. However, if you want a simple design like the shield I created, please talk to me. I have the ability to construct simpler items.

If you have images in mind or a Pinterest Board for your book, that is helpful.

I will send you design mock-ups to choose from, then I will purchase the correct images and finalize the design.

Final images will include:

  1. eBook cover: RGB colors in three file sizes – full, medium, small as JPEG files unless otherwise requested.
  2. Print Cover: CYMK colors in JPEG and PDF file types

**Depending on the length, the average time for me to complete: 2-4 weeks.**

Since this requires me to purchase photos, 1/2 price begins now: $50 per book design
2021 Full Price: $100

Consultation

If you don’t know which stage you’re at in your writing or where to start with the editing process, just send me a message. I will never charge for this. I know authorship can be frustrating. I love helping others. I love stories of all genres. And I want everyone to be proud of their work. I don’t think a conversation should be paid for.

A Note:

My first book was a mess when I started this journey way back in 2012, as was I. I had a lot of wonderful help from Jeni Chappelle. Her patience and skill made me want to get involved in editing too.

I have since taken classes from the Writers’ League of Texas, Editorial Freelancers Association, and Writers’ Digest University. I’ve also published four novels and a children’s book through multiple channels. I am always writing, reading, taking classes, and watching webinars to develope my skills into the best they can be in order to assist you on your road to authorship. There’s just nothing better than holding your finished book, cover and all, in hand for the first time. I want you to know that joy, pride, and relief too.

If you’re looking for a different freelance editor to hire, check out her page (Jeni Chappelle Editorial). She is involved in tons of writer activities and contests. I absolutely recommend her.

I wish you the best. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
